Day 82 - Zero Waste Travel Plan

Mat and I are traveling to Bangkok this weekend to see some friends.  I’ve never been to Thailand before, and am really excited that we’ll have four days with two locals to show us around.  I’m also very excited to try some legit Thai food.

I'll be buying a carbon offset before we head out, to counter the carbon footprint of our flight.  I'll also be preparing to avoid creating too much additional waste during our travels.

The last time we had a plane journey, I ended up disappointed in myself for not being more prepared for the tremendous opportunity there is for creating trash while traveling by air.  This time, fortunately, we have a shorter journey, and I’m planning ahead to be ready to refuse single-use plastics and paper.  I’ll be taking with me:

  • My water bottle to fill up after I’ve gone through security, so I can stay hydrated on the plane
  • Tupperware filled with my own food in case I get hungry on the flight or in the gate area
  • A bandana to use as a napkin
  • My camping spork to use as cutlery

I plan to check in online and use my mobile ticket to eliminate the need for a paper one, and to carry-on my bag, to avoid the gigantic sticker tag that they use when you check luggage.

That will take care of the outward bound journey.  On the return, I’ll just need to find a way to fill my Tupperware with food before we leave Bangkok, which hopefully won't be too difficult.

I’ll be packing light for the four day stay.  It’s going to be hot and rainy in Bangkok, so I’ll need to wear lightweight clothes.  I’m planning to re-wear a few things, and keep it to one outfit per day, with one bonus going-out outfit that I can re-wear if need be.  I’m also taking one active outfit in case we find the opportunity to go for a run (Mat and I are training for a 10k), and 1 lounge-around outfit for hanging out and drinking coffee in the mornings.
