Day 73 - How To Properly Care For Lingerie
In order to extend the life of my clothes, I recently made the switch to line drying them instead of putting them in the tumble-dryer. However, I have to confess that I usually throw my bras and panties in the wash with everything else, and have never really cared to do the research about how to properly care for them. Turns out, it’s not that hard, and is worth the little bit of effort it takes to keep them looking and feeling like new.
HAND WASH YOUR BRAS
The truth is, hand washing is the best way to keep your delicates in good shape. To do this, fill a sink with lukewarm water and a mild, natural laundry soap. Add your bras and swish them around in the water. Let them soak for an hour. Gently rub out any dirt or stains by rubbing the fabric against itself. Rinse in cool water.
If you must machine wash your bras, first hook the back of each bra, and place them in a lingerie bag to avoid twisting and snagging. Use cold to warm water, never hot.
LINE DRY WITH CARE
Always line dry your bras. If your bra has molded cups, do not wring, twist, or in any other way misshape them. Make your hand into a fist and place it inside the cup, and with your other hand cup the outside and gently squeeze to remove excess water. Hang your bras by the center piece (between the cups). If your bra does not have molded cups, place it on a towel, and place another towel over it and gently press to remove excess water before hanging to dry.
You can hand-wash your panties in the same manner, using the towel method to remove excess water before hanging to dry. To machine wash, use cold to warm water, and put your panties in a lingerie bag. Line dry.
To store your bras, hook the backs together and place them in your drawer upright, like you'd see them in a store. Never twist or turn the cups inside out. If you're traveling, place a bundle of socks in the molded cups of your bra and lay it flat in your suitcase.
I've even started going one step further and folding my panties in the KonMari method. I know it's a bit over-the-top, but they look so nice and take up much less space in my drawers! And they lay nice and flat, instead of getting bunched up, twisted and wrinkled.
Hope you enjoy the satisfaction of extending the life of your intimates!
